Philips UV-C case promises a drastic clean for everyday little things

This couldn’t have been a better time for Philips. Amidst the recovery from the Covid-19 epidemic, the manufacturer is launching a mini-disinfection box through its own lighting branch (called Signify). His promise: the complete and simple elimination of all germs on small things. 20 minutes I tested it.

Against germs’ nests

UV-C box for what? Even if we respect barrier gestures and make sure we wash our hands regularly… the little things we use daily (and which we don’t necessarily clean) can be real germ nests. The small box launched by Philips makes it possible to disinfect them. Eyeglasses, keys and jewelry, not to mention our inseparable smartphones that we constantly come into contact with easily find their place there.

With a 1 liter capacity (23.4 x 10.5 x 15.5 cm for 360 grams), all you have to do is open the lid, put the things you want to disinfect in it, lock it, and press the button on the front. This flashes blue for 8 minutes. This is the time UV-C needs to do its work.

From smartphones to remote controls

The box includes four UV-C LED bulbs which, when lit, render the DNA of microorganisms harmless… to 99.9%! This process is known for disinfecting surfaces, air, and even water. Its bactericidal power has been identified on SARS-Cov-2 (or Covid-19).

For our tests, we put the box on our desk and plugged it into a USB-C port on our computer. From day to day, the reaction to using it several times a day became a must. In particular, we used it after every outing to clean the mask, car keys, glasses and smartphone. Before our TV evenings, we did not hesitate to put the TV remote controls and the Internet box inside, where they are manipulated as best as possible by the whole family.

A promise invisible to the eye

Frustration: the box being opaque, we don’t see the effect of light (UV-C rays are dangerous for eyesight). And when we take out our bodies as soon as the flashing blue light in the foreground is off, it is clear that they have not changed in appearance. So the promise made by the Philips device is invisible … but reassuring, anyway.

Selling for 54 euros (but it’s already about 40 euros), Philips’ small UV-C box is not the first in its class. We have already tested Mundus Pro from Einova.

The Philips model is distinguished by a fairly reasonable price and capacity that allows it to process several small things at the same time. Other boxes, such as the Bioclean Box (sold at €79) claim to go even further in sterilization by combining UV-C lamps with heating at 60°C for 40 minutes. This will be especially suitable for all types of masks, especially for deodorizing.
